CTS 01 - 1.1 Corps Organization and Ship’s Routine - Rank Structure

WHAT TEACHING METHOD IS SUITABLE FOR THIS PERIOD
The approach should be using the Presentation and Practical Activity methods.

What - Cadets will learn about the purpose of the cadet and officer rank structures, and how to use them during training activities.
Why - This material is important as it allows cadets and officers to interact with one another in a naval environment.
Expectations - The cadet will be able to visually identify the rank of all members within the corps. Cadets are expected to use proper salutations when dealing with all members of their corps.
The Purpose of Ranks
Why do we use ranks at cadets? (pose question and seek possible responses)

Ranks help distinguish members at different levels of training and responsibility (In other words, those that make decisions and those that follow the orders)

Ranks also allow Navy League cadets and officers to simulate a naval environment or setting

Allows cadets to set solid goals as the progress through training

Cadet Ranks – Introduce cadet ranks and badges, one at a time, and attempt to link each rank with the previous one through the title and the badge.
(i.e. PO 2nd Class PO 1st Class Chief PO 2nd Class Chief PO 1st Class)
(i.e. number of chevrons increases, number of anchors increases)

Officer Ranks – Introduce officer ranks using the same type of scheme as with the cadet ranks. (The visual ranks are apparent)

Use within the corps – Explain the simple procedure of using the rank of an individual followed by their last name. Cadets should also be aware of the short titles, which are:

Male Officers – Sir

CPO1 & CPO2 – Chief

The remainder of the period should be spent having the cadets complete the activity sheets (Handouts 1 & 2)
CONCLUSION

Summarize the main teaching points, and randomly quiz the cadets on the ranks.

The cadets are not expected to know all of the ranks at the end of the period. Rank identification will come with exposure to the organization on a regular basis.
TESTING
-
Cadets will be expected to identify the rank of any uniformed member of the corps before promotion to Ordinary Cadet.

Activity Sheets on Officer and Cadet ranks should be completed in class, and will assist the instructor in determining the level of comprehension for this period.
