The History of the Divisional System

The Divisional System came about over 200 years ago out of necessity. At the time, sailors dealt with the following conditions

  • Low pay

  • Poor living conditions and food

  • Long and difficult working conditions

Once the Divisional System was in place, concern for the sailors living and working conditions became the primary concern of the officers in charge.

This created a better working atmosphere and helped promote TEAMWORK!!!

How the Divisional System works

Called the Divisional System because everything is broken into “divisions”:

  • Division of groups of sailors

  • Division of responsibility and work

This makes it easier to take care of the needs of each individual sailor.

These divisions of sailors each have a senior member to look after them, who in turn report to the senior officer on board ship

Officer Introductions

At this point, all the officers should be given the opportunity to introduce themselves to the new cadets. A simple introduction to include the following is sufficient:

  • Rank and name

  • Position at the corps

  • The duties related to that position

After officers have introduced themselves, you should use Slide #4 to show where they appear in the chain of command.

Activity – Members of My Corps

The remainder of the period should be used for cadets to fill out the activity sheet

CONCLUSION

Summarize the main teaching points, and randomly quiz cadets on the history and purpose for the Divisional System.

The cadets are not expected to know all of the officers by the end of the period, but should have a decent understanding of the purpose of the Divisional System. Officer identification will come with exposure to the organization on a regular basis.

TESTING

Cadets will be expected to identify their division members, and those that fall into their chain of command.

The “Members of my Corps” activity sheet should be completed in class, and will assist the instructor in determining the level of comprehension for this period.
