CTS 01 - 1.4 Corps Organization and Ship’s Routine - Rights, Responsibilities, Duties and Privileges

The approach should be using the Presentation and Practical Activity methods.

What - Cadets will learn about their rights, responsibilities, duties and privileges during cadet activities.

Why - Every member of the corps has rights and privileges, duties and responsibilities.
Expectations - At the end of this lesson, cadets are expected to understand and display the qualities and attitude of a Navy League Cadet.

The Cadet Promise
Cadets repeat the promise upon completion of new entry training for a number of reasons:

  • Promotes an awareness of the goals and objectives of the Navy League Cadets

  • Instills in cadets a sense of commitment to the objectives


i.e. -
“to honour and support my Corps”
promotes loyalty

“to be respectful of others and the rules of the Navy League of Canada”
promotes self-discipline

“to participate in activities regularly”
promotes responsibility

“to honour and support my Corps and Country to the best of my abilities”
promotes citizenship

Tour of the Ship (Facilities)

The remainder of this period should be spent giving a tour of the facilities. Specific mention should be given to the location of routine orders, all places where instruction is likely to take place, office spaces, heads, out of bound areas, etc)

The Responsible Cadet – What can we expect from you?

Ensure understanding prior to moving past each one:

1. Show support for Canada, your community and your corps
2. Treat Officers and other Cadets fairly and with respect
3. Attend parades regularly – and be on time
4. Present oneself in an appropriate manner while in uniform and at all NL Cadet activities
5. Wear and maintain the uniform and equipment in your possession
6. Actively participate during lessons
7. Participate in Navy League branch fund-raising endeavours
8. Perform duties as they are assigned

The Responsible Cadet – actions to avoid

1. Absence, Being Late or Departing Without Permission
2. Deception (i.e. making false charges, lying)
3. Dirtiness and Untidiness (i.e. improperly dressed, spitting, chewing gum, improper hygiene)
4. Substance Abuse (i.e. possession of alcohol and/or drugs)
5. Neglect or Avoidance of Duties (i.e. improper performance of duties, inattention during exercises)

There are guidelines to follow for disciplining a cadet. The punishment will fit the crime. They include everything from a loss of canteen privileges, extra drill, and even a reversion of rank or release from the corps.

4. To make decisions
5. To use the law
6. To feel safe
7. To learn
8. To be heard
9. To say “NO” to unwelcome behaviour
10. To be protected from all forms of harassment

CONCLUSION

For confirmation, have cadets come forward to act out scenarios pertaining to cadet rights and responsibilities. Leave it to the remainder of the group to decide which point is being played out.

TESTING

Although there is no requirement for a performance check, it is imperative that divisional officers maintain divisional notes on their cadets. Divisional Officer notes ensure that an ongoing assessment is taking place.
