CTS 01 - 1.6 Corps Organization and Ship’s Routine - Positions of Messenger
1 Period (45 Minutes)
The approach should be using the Presentation and Practical Activity methods.
1. Corps Parade State
What - How to do the job of a Messenger in a Navy League Cadet Corps
Why - Knowing how to the job of a Messenger will help with the parade night going smoothly.
Expectations - The cadet will be able to assume the position of messenger for the corps.
The job of a messengers is to relay messages to the Executive Officer, Commanding Officer and/or the Reviewing Officer.
Relaying the proper message to the appropriate person will assist with the smooth running of the parade.
The Messenger will relay two messages in a normal parade.
1. Requesting the Executive Officers presence to the parade, and
2. Requesting the presence of the Commanding Officer/ Reviewing Party to the parade.
Requesting the Executive Officers presence to the parade
1. The OOD will call “Messenger”
2. The Messenger will March or Double to the OOD
3. The OOD will report “Please give my compliments to the XO. Ships company mustered and correct for Colors & Prayers/ Sunset”
4. You will ask “permission to carry on?”
5. They will respond “yes please”
6. You will than report to the XO and report “Officer of the Day sends his/her compliments. Ships company mustered and correct for Colors & Prayers/ Sunset, Permission to carry on?”
7. The XO will respond “Yes please”
8. You will now return to the Quarterdeck.
Requesting the Commanding Officers/ Reviewing Parties presence to the parade
1. The XO will call “Messenger”
2. The Messenger will March or Double to the XO
3. The XO will report “Please give my compliments to the CO/ Reviewing Party. Ships company, mustered and correct for Colors & Prayers/ Sunset”
4. You will ask “permission to carry on?”
5. They will respond “yes please”
6. You will than report to the CO/ Reviewing Party and report “Executive Officer sends his/her compliments. Ships company mustered and correct for Colors & Prayers/ Sunset, Permission to carry on?”
7. The CO/RO will respond “Yes please”
8. You will now return to the Quarterdeck.
CONCLUSION
The position of Messenger is an import part of the history of the Navy. This position is that of a “runner” for the Senior Officer present. This person usually carried messages for the officer as there was no other means of communicating. Today it is used more as a ceremonial position.

There is no formal testing for the position of Messenger
