CTS 03 - 1.1 Navy League Movement - History and Objectives of the Navy League


1 Period (45 Minutes)

What - Cadets will learn about the objectives and history of Navy League Cadets, as well as the role played by the local branch
 
Why - Understanding more about the organizations’ origins and goals will help foster pride and loyalty.
 
Expectations - As the end of the period, cadets shall have a better understanding of the organization and how it relates to Corps activities
 
History of the Navy League – How did you get here?

The Navy League Cadet program has a rich and interesting history. These events helped shape the program that you are now a part of.

1895 - the Navy League formed in Britain with the aim of ensuring an adequate naval defense for the British Empire

16 Dec 1895 - first Canadian Branch formed in Toronto

1910 - Royal Canadian Navy established

1917   - first Canadian Boy’s Naval Brigade formed

1923 - Boy’s Navy Brigade name changed to Sea Cadet Corps

1941 - Royal Canadian Navy became a partner in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Movement
 
1948 - Navy League Cadet program established

1950 - Navy League Wrenette program established

Objectives of Navy League Cadets

The following objectives outline roles that cover all aspects of Navy League Cadets:

Objective #1 - To instill in NL Cadets a sense of loyalty and commitment to Canada and to their community

Objective #2 - To instill in NL Cadets a sense of commitment to their Corps and of loyalty and respect for their officers and instructors

Objective #3 - To help NL Cadets learn self-discipline and self-respect

Objective #4 - To help NL Cadets develop good physical and mental fitness

Objective #5 - To instill in NL Cadets a sense of initiative and self-reliance

Objective #6 - To develop teamwork among cadets and encourage them to help others

Objective #7 - To encourage NL cadets to learn about the sea and ships

Objective #8 - To give NL Cadets first aid training

Objective #9 - To create a healthy environment where NL Cadets can have fun

Objective #10 - To inform Cadets about the Canadian Cadet Movement

The Roles of the Navy League Branch

Navy League Branches are responsible for the formation, control, and administration of the NL Cadet Corps. Those responsibilities include:

a) ensuring that training, discipline, moral and attendance are being maintained at the Corps;

b) ensuring all uniforms, equipment and property owned by the league are maintained;

c) visiting the Corps frequently and confer with the Commanding Officer;

d) ensuring that all correspondence (mail) concerning the Corps is handled properly;

e) maintaining the interest and active participation of the Navy League committee; and

f) recommending the appointment, promotion, and retirement of Corps officers.

CONCLUSION

The knowledge gained during this lesson will help the cadet understand why Navy League Cadets exist and the goals that the organization strives to achieve
 
TESTING

Although testing for this CTS is not a requirement, cadets should have a basic knowledge of the local branch roles and be able to identify those members that have direct relations with the Corps.
