CTS 04 - 1.2 Basic Drill at the Halt - Right Dress, Open and Close Order March
1 Period (45 Minutes)
The approach should be using the Presentation and Practical Activity methods.

What - Cadets will learn (a) the right dress, (b) eyes front, (c) the open order march, and (d) the close order march.
Why - Learning these movements is essential for a division mustered on the deck. These movements will be used on a frequent basis.
Expectations - The cadet is required to perform the movements as part of the corps’ nightly routine.
The Standard Pause – Used to ensure that all members of a division use the same timing when a movement has more than one-step. Timing between movements is counted by using a standard pause. If every movement is counted as a “ONE”, then the time between movements is counted as “TWO…THREE”. Numbers should be called out in sequence every ½ second.

THE RIGHT DRESS
Purpose – used to keep a division in line, from left to right, and from front to back.
On the command RIGHT DRESS BY NUMBERS, SQUAD – ONE:
a. the right-hand individual of the front rank stands fast; and
b. the remainder take a half pace forward (40 cm) by shooting the left foot forward, bending the right knee and adopting the position of attention.
On the command SQUAD – TWO:
a. the right file stands fast;
b. the remainder turns head and eyes to the right as far as possible without straining; and
c. simultaneously, the front rank, except the right-hand individual, shoots the right arm its full extent behind the shoulder of the one on the right. The hand is closed as in the position of attention, back of the hand uppermost and arm parallel to the ground.
On the command SQUAD – THREE:
a. the right-hand individual of the front rank stands fast; and
b. the remainder takes up correct alignment, distance and covering by taking short, quick paces until they are in the correct position. Movement starts with the left foot.
On the command RIGHT – DRESS, the three movements are combined. The standard pause shall be observed between the movements.
On the command EYES – FRONT, squad members shall snap the head and eyes to the front and cut the right arm smartly to the rear of the individual on the right and to the position of attention without slapping the thigh.

OPEN ORDER MARCH
Purpose – allows more room in between ranks for inspection and rifle drill.
The open order is executed as follows:
a. the front rank shall move forward three half paces, the rear rank shall step back three half paces and the centre rank shall stand fast;
b. the cadence shall be in quick time; and
c. the arms shall be kept still at the sides.
On the command OPEN ORDER – MARCH, the movements will be executed as for three half paces forward and to the rear, the final movement being executed by bending the right knee, straightening it in double time and placing the right foot smartly on the ground by the left and assuming the position of attention.
The timing for the movements is counted as one, one, one-two.
When formed in two ranks, the front rank stands fast and the rear rank steps back three half paces
NOTE: It is important for the cadets to practice looking out of the corner of their eye to maintain dressing while moving in the ranks. Try not to move the head! Usually, a right dress is ordered after this movement.

COLSE ORDER MARCH
The Close Order March is used to close the ranks after an Open Order March.
On the command CLOSE ORDER – MARCH, the squad shall reverse the movements of Open Order March

CONCLUSION
These positions and movements that form the basis for all other movements. Timing is important, but will seem easier as you practice each movement. Remember that all of these positions are designed with comfort in mind, so if it doesn’t feel right, ask an instructor for assistance.
TESTING
Cadets are expected to perform drill during each training night. Before a cadet is promoted to New Entry, they will have to demonstrate the ability to perform each one of these movements, either during a muster or during a scheduled evaluation period.
